Heavy rainfall causes rising rivers, localized flooding
City of Laval will offer sand and bags to residents who are at risk of flooding
Several municipalities in southern Quebec are warning their citizens to look out for overflowing storm drains and rising water levels along river banks.
Much of the region remains under a heavy rainfall warning.
It has been raining since Tuesday, and according to Environment Canada, there is another 25 to 35 millimetres on the way. The rain is expected to taper off Friday evening.
The city of Laval is warning residents that they should expect flooding in neighbourhoods near the Mille Îles River and the Rivière des Prairies.
The city is offering free sand and bags at fire stations 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 so that people can build dikes around their homes. And it's offering instructions on how to do it.
Sand will be also available in:
- Laval Ouest, in front of 10th and Riviera streets
- Sainte-Dorothée at Berge Couvrette, between 609 and 625 Bord-de-L'Eau
- Chomedey, in Berthiaume-du-Tremblay Park
Other municpalities on the North Shore are dealing with overflowing storm drains. Firefighters in Saint-Eustache, Deux-Montagnes, Sainte-Marthe and Pointe-Calumet are responding to calls.
