Hydro-Québec is working to restore power to households after strong winds took down trees and power lines across the province overnight.

At its peak, more than 230,000 households and businesses in Quebec were without power Saturday morning due to damage from 100 km/h winds.

Hydro spokesperson Francis Labbé said that employees are working to restore power, but it may take some time.

"Some areas are harder to reach and some outtages are harder to clear because sometimes you have trees fallen on equipment and that means that we have to spend lots of time to repair," he said.

"So unfortunately, it is possible that people might wait until tomorrow to get electricity back."

A wind warning was in effect Friday, taking down tree branches and power lines. Municipal workers have started clearing debris from roads and sidewalks.

The same weather system also left thousands without power in Ontario.
