Montreal police are looking for suspects after a young man was fatally shot in Pierrefonds Wednesday night.

Police say emergency calls about gunshots heard near the intersection of Ramsay and Fredmir streets started coming in just before 10:20 p.m.

The incident appears to have started as a fight that got out of hand, said police spokesperson Const. Jean-Pierre Brabant.

The 20-year-old victim was shot at least once in his upper body. Brabant says someone with him tried to take him to hospital in a car.

Police heading to the scene crossed paths with that vehicle at the intersection of Fredmir and Pierrefonds Boulevard and called an ambulance that brought the man to hospital.

He was in critical condition when he arrived and later died, Brabant said.

All possibilities being investigated

Police set up perimeters around the two scenes, which are a few blocks apart.

Brabant said the victim lived in the area.

Crime scene technicians and the canine unit were at the scene for most of the morning.

Martin Leclerc lives a few houses away from the intersection. He's been in the area for 15 years.

"Usually it's pretty quiet. Kids play in the street. I'm really surprised," he said.

It's still unclear what the fight was about. Police say they aren't ruling anything out, including the possibility it was a drug deal gone bad.

Police say the victim had no known ties to criminal activity.

His death is Montreal's 20th homicide of the year.
