We recently told you about the 11 places in the province that feature the N-word or its French equivalent in their names. Now a petition has started to have those names changed.

A Montreal woman has launched a petition calling for the Quebec government to change the names of the 11 places in the province that use the N-word — or its French equivalent — in their names.

CBC News reported the province was considering changing the names of the places last week.

That encouraged PhD student Rachel Zellars to start a petition, asking the government to change the names as soon as possible. She said the N-word and its French equivalent are racial terms of debasement.

In 24 hours, it received more than 700 signatures.

If the petition does lead to change, it's unclear when that might happen. Quebec's toponymy commission doesn't sit until the fall, and members will have to make decisions about each of the 11 places.
