The City of Montreal wants the names of its streets, parks and municipal buildings to reflect the contributions made by women to the city's history.

The city has created a name bank, called Toponym'Elles, to help come up with the names of 375 prominent women in time for Montreal's 375th anniversary in 2017.

The initiative is meant to address the lack of diversity when it comes to the names of public spaces, according to the city.

Women make up only six per cent of 6,000 place names in Montreal, while men represent more than 50 per cent.

Montrealers are invited to submit suggestions of prominent women to the city.
