A downpour is headed for Montreal and could cause flooding in some areas, according to Environment Canada.

The weather agency is warning Quebecers that starting Tuesday a mixed bag of precipitation will sweep across the province starting in the west.

It says that rain in the western regions of the province will become snow as it passes over the central regions. Some areas in between will also see freezing rain.

Environment Canada has released special weather statements and warnings for the affected areas.

Rainfall warning in Montreal

A rainfall warning affects the Montreal area, including Châteauguay, Laval and Longueuil.

Rain will be heavy at times with between 25 to 30 millimetres expected to fall.

It will continue for most of the week and since the ground is still frozen, it won't easily be absorbed into the soil.

Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible and people are advised not to approach riverbanks or streams.
