The city of Montreal is introducing a new tax on all vehicles.

A spokesperson for mayor Gérald Tremblay confirms a tax on registered vehicles will be part of next year's municipal budget.

The city has not decided on an amount, but said all proceeds will go towards improving public transit.

Demerged cities on the island also want to get in on the act.

Right now, they don't have the same taxation powers as Montreal.

They're asking the province for permission to charge this new tax as well.

Montreal will reveal more details about the tax at a press conference scheduled Thursday afternoon.
