Montreal's observation wheel officially opens today in the city's Old Port.

Billed as the largest attraction of its kind in Canada, the 60-metre high Grande roue de Montréal will begin operating at 4 p.m. and runs until 11 p.m.

The observation wheel features 42 climate-controlled gondolas and offers 360-degree views of the city and the surrounding regions.

Each ride lasts two or three rotations for a total of between 15 and 20 minutes, according to its operators.

Take a ride on the observation wheel with CBC reporter Sarah Leavitt:

The wheel was supposed to open in June but the grounds around it and a building housing a café, bar and offices weren't finished.

The bar and café are still not finished but the wheel's operators are proceeding with the grand opening.
