Canada's new heritage minister, Mélanie Joly, worked as an intern for CBC's French-language service, Radio-Canada, in 2007.

Mélanie Joly now oversees CBC/Radio-Canada, but not so long ago she had a very different role at the public broadcaster.

The newly elected Liberal MP from Montreal, who was sworn in as heritage minister on Wednesday, was an intern with Radio-Canada in 2007.

Joly has already outlined some of her priorities in her new post, including increasing the budgets of the Canada Council for the Arts and the CBC, as well as planning for the countrywide celebration of the 150th anniversary of Confederation in 2017.

She said she will keep the Liberal promise to double the annual federal contribution to the Canada Council of the Arts from $180 million to $360 million, while restoring $25 million in funding to Telefilm Canada and the National Film Board.

The Liberals also committed to providing $150 million more to CBC and Radio-Canada during the election campaign.
