A man in his 30s has been hospitalized in critical condition after being hit by at least one bullet on Monday morning in Laval.

The shooting occurred at about 4 a.m. in a municipal parking lot in front of a multi-unit residential building located on du Havre des Îles Avenue.

The parking lot serves residents of du Tremblay Island in the Chomedey neighbourhood, just north of Montreal.

A bullet casing was found on the ground near the scene, police say.

Laval police spokesperson Const. Evelyne Boudreau said an employee of the apartment building first alerted police to the incident.

The wounded man was found unconscious, she said, and he was still in critical condition by 7 a.m. Monday, but his condition had improved.

Though the victim is known by Laval police, she said he is not believed to be involved in organized crime.

Laval police investigators will be "combing the parking lot" for evidence, she said.

Those linked to the initial 911 call are being questioned, but it still has to be determined if the shooting itself was witnessed.

There are currently no suspects and police have made no arrests.
