Montreal police have seized more than $2.5 million in drugs in a major bust in the southern part of the city.

On Thursday, officers raided five houses, five cars and a hotel room, finding $160,000 in cash and 50 kilograms of methamphetamine powder valued at a minimum of $2.5 million. A small amount of fentanyl was also seized.

Southern division Cmdr. Mustaky Jean said the investigation began in April, when officers received multiple calls of fentanyl overdoses in the southern part of Montreal.

Since then, police had been following a few suspects they believed were dealing drugs.

Four people were arrested—three men and a woman—and are expected to be charged today, said Mustaky.

Mustaky told CBC the operation was a success.

"We're very happy. Why are we happy? It's because when you get those drugs off the street you make a huge difference for many people who could get killed with the drugs," he said, adding he believes the arrests will also hurt organized crime in the city.
