The daughter of an Italian Montrealer who was interned during the Second World War will be attending today's special ceremony at City Hall commemorating that dark moment in history.
Giulietta Doganieri was just a child of five years of age when her father Nicola was taken away, like so many other Canadians of Italian origin, because of his roots.
On this day 73 years ago, Canada declared war on the fascist regime of Benito Mussolini.
Doganieri described to Mike Finnerty of CBC's Daybreak how her mother was left alone to raise seven children and how she had to clean houses to feed her family.
As for herself, Doganieri told Daybreak she kept silent for years because of feelings of shame. Now she says it's time to speak out.
