Missing Montrealer Frédéric Giasson has been found safe and sound in Nepal.

Giasson was on a trip around the world when the earthquake hit outside of Kathmandu over the weekend.

Police in Nepal said the death toll from Saturday's earthquake has now topped 5,000.

Giasson, 20, was in the small village of Lukla at the base of Mount Everest, when the earthquake hit.

After days without any word from his son, his father said he received a call shortly after midnight.

"He took a 12 hour bus and he came in to Kathmandu ... so the first thing he did was he called us," said father Antoine Giasson.

"We're really happy."

Giasson senior said he had been holding out hope his son had survived the deadly earthquake.

"I was sure he wasn't dead, but you never know," he said.
