Dominic Martin has been charged with second-degree murder in his daughter's death.

The 23-month-old baby died after spending the day in her father's car.

Martin says he forgot about the toddler and went to work, and only remembered she was in the car when he left work.

He brought the baby to the Angrignon Hospital Centre in Verdun borough, where doctors confirmed the girl's death. According to an autopsy report, the baby died of heatstroke.

The maximum penalty for the crime is life in prison.

Martin, 26, pleaded not guilty and was freed from custody on Friday. He will be back in court on Oct. 2.

The baby's tearful mother was in the first row of the courtroom on Friday when Martin appeared.
