TransCanada's Energy East pipeline target of Quebec protest

The Energy East pipeline was at the heart of a protest Sunday afternoon in Sorel-Tracy.

Several groups denounced the project outside an oil storage facility owned by Kildair. Organizers are worried about the impact the pipeline could have on the environment.

Among the groups taking part in the protest was the Le Réseau québécois des femmes en environnement, who argued that women would likely bear the brunt of any negative health effects from the pipeline.

The demonstration in the Montérégie comes one day before hearings on the project by Quebec's environmental review board, known by its French acronym BAPE, are set to begin.

A coalition of environmental groups was seeking an injunction because it believes the hearings will not be complete without impact studies from TransCanada, which is behind the proposed pipeline.

Justice Élise Poisson rejected the request in a decision handed down Friday afternoon.
