West Island community benefits from Empty Bowls fundraiser
Organization seeks to raise funds and awareness about hunger in Montreal
Saturday's Empty Bowls fundraiser in Pointe-Claire left donors with more than the warming satisfaction that they helped the hungry — donors got homemade soup in a handcrafted bowl as well.
Local potters donated their work which was then bought by attendees for $25 and filled with soup.
Empty Bowls has been raising funds and public awareness about hunger and food security in Montreal for the past decade.
Artist Jen Baumeister from Hudson said contributing her work to a good cause has a special significance.
"For me as a potter, it's much more satisfying being involved in an event like this than donating food to the grocery store basket," she said.
All proceeds from the fundraiser were donated to Breadbasket Lac St. Louis, a non-profit that provides community kitchens and food programs to the West Island.
