Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre says he has no issue being likened to minions — the luckless, yellow, capsule-shaped servants of Despicable Me fame — especially when the comparison makes him look thinner.

Coderre was responding to a cartoon by Serge Chapleau in Friday's La Presse newspaper of a minion with the caption "Mayor Coderre resurfaces."

The cartoon and a photo montage of Coderre and a minion have been making the rounds on Twitter.

Both play on images of Coderre dressed in a blue protective suit and a yellow helmet Thursday while inspecting repairs to a key sewer interceptor.

The repairs were what necessitated this week's dumping of eight billion litres of raw sewage into the St. Lawrence River, a controversial move that has drawn international concern.

When asked about the minion comparison on Friday, Coderre took it in stride.

"My daughter was happy. She really loves minions," he said.

The mayor also thanked Chapleau for making him look thinner.

"That's great news. It means my bike is working."

  • An earlier version of this story incorrectly said that the minions are characters from Pixar animation studios. They were in fact created by Illumination Entertainment.
