COVID-19 in Quebec: What you need to know on Monday

Quebec posted more than 1,000 cases again Monday and the northern regions of Chibougamau and Chapais have entered the red zone. Here's what you need to know.

  • Quebec reported 1,164 new cases of COVID-19 and 13 more deaths on Monday.

The northern regions of Chibougamau and Chapais, as well as the James Bay area, now fall under the province's red zone restrictions as the virus spreads into far-flung regions.

Bars and restaurants are closed in those regions starting Monday, and other measures will come into effect on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, public health authorities in Saguenay had to transfer a COVID-19 patient to a Quebec City intensive care unit over the weekend.

Hospital beds are quickly filling up in Chicoutimi, the region's main COVID-19 intake centre, and running near capacity for intensive care.

There is a lot going on in Quebec hospitals in January – more injuries, respiratory illnesses and cardiac episodes. And as infectious disease specialist Dr. Cécile Tremblay explains, that is also when COVID cases from Christmas will start to pop up, another source of stress on the health-care system.

What are the symptoms of COVID-19? 

  • Fever. 
  • New or worsening cough. 
  • Difficulty breathing. 
  • Sudden loss of smell without a stuffy nose.
  • Gastrointestinal issues (such as nausea, diarrhea).  

If you think you may have COVID-19, the government asks that you call 1‑877‑644‑4545 to schedule an appointment at a screening clinic. 

Quebec government reminders for preventing the spread of COVID-19: 

  • Wash your hands frequently.
  • Avoid touching your face.
  • Wear a mask or face covering when physical distancing is not possible. Wearing a mask is mandatory in enclosed public spaces across the province.
  • Stay at least two metres away from other people as much as possible. 
  • Self-isolate for 14 days after returning from a stay outside the country.
