With cases soaring, the Quebec government has made masks mandatory for high school students starting Oct. 8. It has also banned team sports, organized leisure activities and shut down gyms.

At 5 p.m., Premier François Legault is expected to announce the federal COVID-19 tracing app will now be available in Quebec.

Quebec has reported the highest single-day total since the pandemic started, with 1,191 new cases on Monday.

This is the fourth day in a row where Quebec's daily total has exceeded 1,000.

Last spring, there were only five days when the province saw more than 1,000 cases — the highest of which was on April 15, when there were 1,104 cases reported. (It should be noted the rate of positive results was higher in April and May, suggesting there were more cases in the community at that time, we just weren't recording them.)
