Minor charged in fatal stabbing of 16-year-old boy outside Montreal high school
Friends, family and others in community will gather for vigil this evening
A minor has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the fatal stabbing of a 16-year-old boy outside his Montreal high school on Monday.
Jannai Dopwell-Bailey was stabbed in the parking lot of Mile End high school in the city's Côte-des-Neiges—Notre-Dame-de-Grâce borough.
According to police, there was a fight outside involving a group of teens.
Police say they arrested the minor on Thursday evening and he appeared in youth court on Friday afternoon. His identity is not being released due to his age.
If the teen is convicted, the Crown will seek to have him sentenced as an adult, according to Radio-Canada.
The youth will remain in detention until at least next Tuesday. A date will be set for a bail hearing.
Montreal police were looking for up to three suspects on the day of the attack. Police said videos posted to social media in the following days, where people were seen mocking Dopwell-Bailey's death, would play a big part in the investigation.
"He got arrested, yes. But can he bring back my son? No," said the victim's mother, Charla Dopwell. "I have the same feeling inside. I feel just sick to my heart."
She also urged police to arrest other people who were involved in her son's death.
The news of the arrest and the court appearance comes on the same day families and friends are expected to gather at a vigil at the scene of the attack to remember the teen.
Dopwell will be there at 6 p.m. She has described her son as loving and caring, with a passion for dancing and rapping.
"It makes me feel thankful, grateful that the whole community is coming out for my son because it's something very horrific for mothers," she said. "I thank everybody who wants to come out and support me and my family and help ...find the murders and get justice."
