An estimated 2,000 Syrian refugees should be arriving in Montreal this week, Quebec's government announced on Sunday.

Six planes carrying the refugees are expected to arrive at the Montreal–Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport between Dec. 28 and Dec. 31.

The details were communicated by news release on Sunday from Quebec's interim Public Security Minister, Pierre Moreau, and Immigration Minister, Kathleen Weil.

The planes will be departing from either Lebanon or Jordan and will be carrying around 300 passengers each.

Most of the refugees are sponsored by family members or organizations.

More than 1,700 Syrian refugees have already arrived in Quebec since the start of 2015.

Quebec's government has committed to receiving 3,650 Syrian refugees by the end of 2015 and will welcome the same number in 2016.
