Accused ex-judge stays behind bars

A retired Quebec Court of Appeal justice charged with murder will remain in custody this week until his next court appearance.

A retired Quebec Court of Appeal justice charged with murder will remain in custody this week until his next court appearance.

Jacques Delisle, 75, has been accused of first-degree murder and possession of an illegal firearm in connection with the shooting death of his sick wife in November 2009.

Delisle appeared briefly in court in Quebec City on Monday, where his bail proceeding was delayed until next week.

A full publication ban is in effect on Delisle's court proceedings.

The retired judge is the first member of the Canadian judiciary to be charged with murder. Quebec's Crown office has been forced to resort to exceptional measures to deal with his case.

Before Delisle was arrested, the Crown presented evidence in an in-camera hearing known as a pre-inquiry. The technique is sometimes used in cases where evidence is extremely technical.
