Man dies after fire rips through apartment building in Montreal's Sud-Ouest borough
Fire was likely accidental, police says
One person is dead and another is in critical condition, after a fire broke out in a two-storey building in Montreal's Sud-Ouest borough.
Emergency services received a call around 5:45 p.m., Tuesday, reporting the fire on Saint-Antoine Street near Saint-Ferdinand Street.
When first responders arrived at the scene, they found a man unconscious. They attempted to resuscitate him, but he was declared dead shortly after, according to Montreal police spokesperson Caroline Chèvrefils.
She says the man's identity hasn't been determined yet.
Another person was taken to hospital in critical condition.
The cause of the fire seems to be accidental, says Chèvrefils, adding that an investigation is ongoing.
The building had four residential units, though the total number of occupants is unknown.
According to fire Chief William Murray, the fire began on the second floor before spreading to the roof.
