A 94-year-old woman who went missing from a Winnipeg care home while temperatures fell in Winnipeg was found seeking shelter in a garage.

Bessie Johnson had last been seen in the Riverbend area on Sunday, at about 4 p.m., walking eastbound over the Chief Peguis Bridge.

Police, who issued a public plea for help finding Johnson, said she was only wearing a long maroon fleece jacket and runners.

She was found just before 9 a.m. Monday in the garage of a home on Novavista Drive in the city's St. Vital area — about 20 kilometres away from the Chief Peguis Bridge.

Police believe she may have climbed into an unlocked car at one point and was unknowingly driven to the St. Vital home, where she was found by the owners the next morning.

Johnson, who walks with a cane and is about 4-foot-10 tall with thin build, is reported to be in fine condition, according to police.
