Winnipeg Transit fares to increase in January of 2016

It's going to be a little more expensive to ride the bus come January.

Tickets from 2015 will be accepted until the end of March, city says

It's going to cost a little more to ride the bus in Winnipeg next year.

Starting Jan. 1 of 2016, the city says a standard Winnipeg Transit fare, paid in cash on the bus, will rise from $2.60 to $2.65. That jump also applies for Handi-Transit users.

The price of pre-purchased ticket sheets will rise from $2.25 per ticket to $2.30. Seniors and reduced cash fares will cost $2.15.

Other rate hikes include:

  • Max 5 Pass: from $20.25 to $20.70
  • SuperPass: from $22.50 to $23.00
  • Monthly Pass: from $86.65 to $88.55
  • Post-Secondary Pass: from $69.35 to $70.85

Tickets from 2015 will be accepted until March 31, 2016.

Last month, the province announced it would be amending its funding agreement to help the City of Winnipeg expand its bus rapid transit system without having to raise fares by an extra five cents. The Manitoba government pledged to give $1.7 million to help keep potential transit fare rises, associated with expansion costs, down.

That agreement has no bearing on the forthcoming $0.05 rise, which occurs annually with inflation, a spokesperson with the city said.
