Winnipeg splash pad roundup: 5 places to keep cool with the kids

It's August and the long, dog days of summer are here.

By this point, you're likely starved for things to do with the young ones. That's why I've rounded up a few favourite water-based play places in and around Winnipeg.

1) Best for All Ages: Kildonan Park Pool

A renovation at Kildonan Park Pool a few years ago saw the addition of a 21-feature splash pad, which is a hit with babies, toddlers and preschoolers. Two waterslides and deep-end diving boards mean fun for older kids and the heated, beach-entry pool ensures everyone is comfortable.

Mom Tip: Arrive early or late to avoid midday lines. This is a busy pool, and on a hot day lineups are guaranteed as admission is based on the required swimmer​-lifeguard ratios. We like to pack a picnic supper and go on hot evenings in my family.

2) Best Day Trip: Selkirk Park Pool

OK, so this one kind of breaks the whole "places in Winnipeg" rule, but the Selkirk Park Pool & Splashpad is just a short 25-minute drive from the city and is located in a pretty, riverside location.

What's great about it is the giant, circular, hybrid beach-pool. It's a pool, surrounded by sand, which makes for great beach-like lounging. A swim platform gives strong swimmers a good challenge and there is the added bonus of the small splash pad for youngsters.

A visit to the nearby Marine Museum of Manitoba ca​ps​ off a fantastic day trip.

Mom Tip: Pack drinks and snacks as there are no concessions, and re-entry is limited to within five minutes during peak periods.​

3) Best for babies: Vimy Ridge Park Spray Pad

This hidden gem in Wolseley is perfect for babies and young toddlers.

It's completely fenced in, meaning it's easy for parents to manage busy kids, and the small, beach-entry wading pool allows even the littlest kids to have fun splashing around. Lots of shade also ensures nobody is getting too much sun.

Mom Tip: Plan a stroller walk after the babies are tuckered out to great shops in the neighbourhood.

4) Best for Learning: Variety Heritage Park

The spray pad at the Variety Heritage Adventure Playground at The Forks is based on The Metropolis, and kids can learn about buildings from Winnipeg's past, as pieces are incorporated right into the construction.

The adjoining Parks Canada playground encourages kids to imagine and explore the province's long history.

5) Best for Thrill Seekers: Fun Mountain

With eight waterslides, the thrill seeker in your group is sure to have a blast at Fun Mountain.

While there are height limits on some slides, there are many other attractions to keep everyone entertained. Boat tours, bumper boats, mini golf and more are included with admission.
