Winnipeg's frozen pipes crisis cost the city $8M

The coldest winter in over a century cost Winnipeg more than $8 million in overtime, materials, equipment and telling homeowners to keep their taps running to prevent the pipes from freezing up.

Overtime, materials, equipment and letting taps run sent costs soaring

Frozen pipes left many Sudbury residents without water this winter. Infrastructure general manager Tony Cecutti says it cost $2.9 million to repair water lines and water main breaks between January and March. (CBC)

The coldest winter in over a century cost Winnipeg more than $8 million in overtime, materials, equipment and telling homeowners to keep their taps running to prevent the pipes from freezing up.

Last winter, the frost penetrated the ground as much as three metres, shutting off water supply to thousands of Winnipeggers.

The city has applied to the province for disaster financial assistance and could get up to half of that money back.
