Assiniboine Forest in Winnipeg may be one of the greatest places in Canada, if enough people vote for the location in a nationwide competition.

The annual Great Places in Canada competition celebrates beloved Canadian locations nominated by proud citizens keen on promoting a favourite spot.

"It's just beautiful," Winnipegger Kelly Johannsen, a regular at the Assiniboine Forest, told CBC News. "It's like an escape from, every day, the city life."

Other Manitoba locations have also been nominated including like Hecla Provincial Park, Osborne Street, Saint-Boniface, the town of Churchill, and Winnipeg's downtown corner of Portage and Main.

The winning locations will be chosen based on the number of votes each place receives and by a panel of professional planners, with results announced in April.
