A 28-year-old man has been arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated assault and one count of possession of a weapon in connection with two stabbings downtown on Friday, Winnipeg police say.

Officers were informed around 5:10 p.m. that two men in their 30s were stabbed near Portage Avenue and Smith Street.

The first man was shopping at a store on Portage Avenue when a man he didn't know confronted him with a knife before stabbing him and leaving.

The second man was confronted outside by a man moments later and, after a brief conversation, was stabbed by the man, who then took off.

The two stabbing victims were in unstable condition when taken to the hospital but were later upgraded to stable condition.

Officers arrested an intoxicated suspect near Portage Avenue and Garry Street, the news release said.
