Man died in hospital after fight on Alexander Avenue, Winnipeg police say

Winnipeg police are investigating the death of a 23-year-old man who was fatally injured in Winnipeg on Friday.

A 23-year-old man has died after he was assaulted following a verbal confrontation in central Winnipeg on Friday, Winnipeg police say.

Jamal Eli Preston Miles lived in Winnipeg and is a member of Shamattawa First Nation, a Winnipeg police news release said Tuesday. 

Police went to Alexander Avenue, between Isabel and Sherbrook streets near Dufferin School, around 8:45 p.m. to investigate a report of an injured man. 

They found Miles in critical condition and he was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead. 

Several people got in an argument outside that escalated, police said. Miles was seriously assaulted and the others involved fled before police arrived.
