Winnipeg police have a suspect in custody after fires were lit in a seniors complex under construction in St. James Sunday afternoon.

Police said two fires lit in the building on Sinawik Bay around 5 p.m. were snuffed out early on and didn't cause much damage.

A 16-year-old boy was arrested in connection with the fires and remains in custody, police said.

The arson unit is investigating the fires. No damage estimate has been released and no one was injured, police said.

Wolseley fires

Police said it is too early to know whether the fires are connected to a string of blazes in Wolseley that happened over the weekend.

A condo under construction at the corner of Westminster Avenue and Maryland Street was reduced to rubble and ash after a massive fire ripped through the multi-storey complex early Saturday morning. Two neighbouring homes were also seriously burned in the fire and six people — two residents and four firefighters — were sent to hospital with burn wounds.

A garage nearby on Chestnut Street was also destroyed by a fire police have connected to arson.
