A new set of therapy lamps are being installed at two libraries in Winnipeg to help readers guard against Seasonal Affective Disorder or SAD.

Two public libraries in Winnipeg will now offer sun light therapy to people with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Sufferers experience symptoms that range from fatigue to sadness, apathy, depression, and in extreme cases, suicidal ideation.

More than 15,000 Winnipeggers are estimated to experience SAD, said Tara Brousseau Snider, executive director of the Mood Disorders Association of Manitoba in a release.

SAD lamps can provide some relief. They emit light similar to that given off by tanning lamps, without the UV rays and can be used as substitutes for sunlight as a source of Vitamin D.

The Mood Disorders Association of Manitoba has previously said people typically use the lamps most from fall to spring, the darkest parts of the year.

"I am pleased to see our libraries taking a step towards providing a healthier environment for our citizens," said Winnipeg city councillor Scott Gillingham in a release.

Full-spectrum therapy lamps will be available at the Millennium Library located at 251 Donald St. and St. James-Assiniboia Library located at 1910 Portage Ave. during business hours.
