When the Winnipeg Jets face the Anaheim Ducks in game one of the Stanley Cup playoffs, they'll have a brand spanking new fan cheering them on.

Jett Welwood, named after the team, arrived at St. Boniface Hospital at 8:04 p.m. Monday.

He's Justine and Jeremy Welwood's first baby. His dad said it was only natural to name him after their team.

"It was just a name that we really liked," said Jeremy. "Of course, we live in Winnipeg, and we love the Jets, so we thought it [had] a nice little quirk."

The couple didn't know the gender of the baby until he was born, but they had decided that's what they would name a boy a few months back. If the baby had been a girl, she wouldn't have been named Jett, they said.

"I always liked the name Jett, and not just because the Winnipeg Jets," said Justine.

The couple are fans of the team, but both admit Jeremy is the bigger fan.

"I've been playing hockey my whole life and it's definitely a part of my life," said the new dad, smiling.

The Jets take to the ice at the Honda Centre on Thursday for the first game of the series.

The team will play two games in Anaheim before returning home for games three and four at the MTS Centre.

And just in time.

"I kind of wanted him to be born before the playoffs started," said Jeremy.  "I wanted to watch the first game with him."

Justine is looking forward to it too.

"I think it's meant to be," said Justine. "I think it's pretty cool."

The two are still debating whether Jett is too young to attend a playoff game if Jeremy manages to score tickets.

"It might be too soon right now," said Justine.
