Winnipeg Folk Festival 2017 lineup includes Feist, the Shins, Barenaked Ladies

Feist, the Shins, and City and Colour will headline the Winnipeg Folk Festival this year. The 2017 lineup was unveiled Thursday night at The Good Will.

Other big name acts include Barenaked Ladies, Brandi Carlile, Bruce Cockburn and Daniel Lanois.

Local favourites John K. Samson, Joey Landreth and Begonia, Alexa Dirks' latest project, are all also on the bill.

This year's big names are mostly Canadian, perhaps due to the challenges the festival faces with the low Canadian dollar.

Some years, about half of the performers in the festival are American, and they are paid in U.S. dollars. 

Earlier this year, organizers said they were working hard with American music festivals to maintain the talent the festival has brought in previous years.

The five-day festival has seen attendance of nearly 60,000 in previous years, but numbers have been slightly lower since its 40th anniversary in 2013.

The festival is slated to run at Birds Hill Park from July 6 to 9 this year, and tickets are already on sale.
