Winnipeg police are warning the public about fentanyl that has been pressed and packaged into colourful shapes "similar to cut-out cookies, colourful candles, soaps or confections" recently found in the city.

In a news release Friday afternoon police said they became aware of the new form of the drug during an ongoing drug investigation by their guns and gangs unit.

The Winnipeg Police Service says it's continuing to investigate and "cannot stress enough that if you come across similar items do not touch them."

Police also advised people to report similar items to their non-emergency line at 204-986-6222 and call 911 if they are in a medical crisis.

They also urged people to never use drugs alone and always carry naloxone to reduce the risk of an opioid overdose.
