Peregrine Falcon Cam streaming online from downtown Winnipeg

The 2016 Falcon Cam is now live streaming from the nest of two peregrine falcons in downtown Winnipeg on the CBC website. 

Tracy Maconachie, project coordinator with the Peregrine Falcon Recovery Project, says this year's pair is the same as last year — a male named Smiley who hatched in Grand Forks in 2009 and a female named Princess who hatched in 2002 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The falcon cam broadcasts the falcon's nest on a ledge at the Radisson Hotel in downtown Winnipeg. Princess and Smiley laid four eggs in April and Maconachie expects them to hatch sometime this week.

In 2014 Princess and Smiley successfully raised two female chicks — Vimy and Chapelle. But in 2015, the pair nested in an exposed location and lost all four of their eggs during a bad storm, said Maconachie. This year the pair have nested in the more sheltered location where they nested in 2014.

The Radisson Hotel in Winnipeg is one of four confirmed nests in Manitoba this year; three are in Winnipeg and one is in Brandon at the McKenzie Seeds Building, said Maconachie.

Since 2006, CBC Manitoba and the Peregrine Falcon Recovery Project have collaborated to provide Manitobans with the opportunity to observe a family of peregrines on the Falcon Cam as they nest and prepare to welcome their chicks.
