A Winnipeg dentist has been charged with five counts of sexual assault following his alleged involvement in incidents involving five boys under the age of 16.

According to police, some of those boys were his patients.

The incidents reportedly took place between January 1998 and May 2014 and after what Winnipeg police are calling a lengthy investigation, Ronald Walter Peterson, 68, was arrested on Nov. 13.

Police say victims have come forward in the past, but there was never enough evidence to lay charges. Two new victims came forward in May and police began the investigation that led to Peterson's arrest.

The incidents reportedly took place in professional settings and while Peterson was out in the community socializing.

He has been released on a promise to appear.
