A Winnipeg taxi driver is dead after his cab was hit by a stolen sport utility vehicle speeding along Portage Avenue early Saturday morning.

The Duffy's Taxi, driven by 55-year-old Antonio Lanzellotti, was heading south on Maryland Street when the accident occurred, police said.

The lone passenger in the cab was injured, as were five people in the SUV — including the driver, who was hit by another car after he was thrown onto the road.

Police are still looking for that car, which left the scene, describing it as a red or maroon, four-door sedan.

Duffy's dispatcher Barry Homenick told CBC News that Lanzellotti had only started driving for Duffy's in February.

"He was well-spoken, he helped everybody, he was a very courteous driver and was very cautious on the roads," Homenick said.

"This is a new team player who just came aboard and it's kind of hard on everybody."

The company is taking donations for the driver's family, he said.
