Winnipeggers will go to the polls on Oct. 24 to elect a mayor and city councillors — but voters in the city's newest electoral ward already know who their councillor will be.
Coun. Janice Lukes, who currently represents the South Winnipeg-St. Norbert ward, was acclaimed in Waverley West, as no other candidates registered to run there in the 2018 election.
The new south Winnipeg ward of Waverley West was created in one of the city's fastest-growing areas after a city commission set new boundaries for this year, essentially cutting in half the massive South Winnipeg-St. Norbert ward (which previously had a population of 68,112 — 45 per cent larger than the average for the city's wards).
That created the new Waverley West ward (with a population of 44,006, according to 2016 census data) and the renamed St. Norbert-Seine River ward.
Waverley West includes Whyte Ridge, Linden Ridge, Agassiz, Richmond West, South Pointe, Fairfield Park, and the Bridgwater neighbourhoods, among others.

What the councillor says on key issues
Questions in this section were among those voters in the ward said they wanted asked of the councillor. Responses have been edited and condensed.
Some residents in your neighbourhood say they want a community centre. What are you doing about that?
We have purchased land east of Kenaston and south of the new Bison Boulevard. I have secured funding to do an area structure plan. This determines things like water, sewer and power lines. I have also secured more than $11 million towards the structure itself.
Why was the fountain [at Bridgwater Lakes] shut down [earlier than usual] this year?
That fountain is getting structural repairs to the paving stones — they shifted.
What are you doing about the soccer field being torn up? [The Tim Sale Drive soccer field was closed earlier this year, along with the Bridgwater Lakes splash pad. The splash pad later reopened.]
The soccer field is owned by the developer, which is Manitoba Housing. It has to be brought up to city standards before it can be taken over by the city.
