Westwood takes the high road after Bombers fire Berry

Former Winnipeg Blue Bombers placekicker Troy Westwood says he feels no satisfaction or sense of vindication with the firing this week of Doug Berry, the head coach.

Former Winnipeg Blue Bombers placekicker Troy Westwood says he feels no satisfaction or sense of vindication with the firing this week of Doug Berry, the team’s head coach.

For the past two CFL seasons there has been a high-profile battle between 17-year kicker Westwood and Berry.

Berry cut Westwood from the football club in June.

Later in the summer, Westwood wrote a newspaper editorial criticizing Berry and the way he treated some players.

Some of his criticisms were partly echoed by the CFL club’s management when Berry was released.

But today Westwood said he does not feel in the least vindicated by the latest turn of events.

"I knew it was truthful when I wrote [the editorial criticizing his former coach] so … there's no satisfaction or vindication here for me. I didn't want to see the team fail and I didn't really want to see Doug Berry fail. I don't take any, there's nothing that makes me happy about this whole situation, it's just a real unfortunate course of events."

Westwood wishes the situation could have been avoided.

He said Berry might have had a better season if he had brought in a stronger replacement kicker.
