A Winnipeg hotel was evacuated early Monday due to a carbon monoxide scare.

Emergency crews were called to the Viscount Gort Hotel, on Portage Avenue and Route 90, about 12:15 a.m. about the smell of smoke on the second floor.

A carbon monoxide reading was taken and indicated high levels of the deadly gas.

The building was evacuated and transit buses were brought in to shelter guests until the hotel was properly ventilated.

The problem was eventually traced to a faulty rooftop heater.

No one required any medical treatment.
