Via Rail's passenger service to Churchill will start again Friday, nearly seven weeks after being halted due to a freight train derailment.

According to OmniTrax, which owns the Hudson Bay Railway line, 13 grain cars from a 50-car load derailed about 32 kilometres south of Churchill on June 2.

No injuries were reported but the tracks required repair.

About 22 Via passengers heading to Churchill from Winnipeg were delayed in Thompson and were later flown to Churchill to complete their trip.

Another 40 passengers were scheduled to travel between Winnipeg and Churchill the following week. They were given an opportunity to cancel their trips or change their dates.
