Veterans escort Speaker into Manitoba Legislature in lead-up to Remembrance Day

Veterans and members of the Canadian Armed Forces will take turns escorting the Speaker of the Manitoba Legislature into the house this week in advance of Remembrance Day.
Veterans of the Canadian Armed Forces escorted Speaker Myrna Driedger into the Manitoba Legislature Monday, Nov. 7, 2016 ahead of Remembrance Day ceremonies this Friday.

Veterans and members of the Canadian Armed Forces will take turns escorting the Speaker of the Manitoba Legislature into the house this week in advance of Remembrance Day.

On Monday afternoon, veterans from several conflicts participated in a procession, walking Speaker Myrna Driedger into the Legislature before question period.

​Several other veterans were in the gallery, and were given a standing ovation by MLAs.

Similar ceremonies will take place all week, with Royal Canadian Air Force members escorting Driedger on Tuesday at 10 a.m., Canadian Forces members performing the honours on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m., and a Royal Canadian Navy escort completing the circuit on Thursday at 10 a.m. 

In addition, a poppy image is being shone on the Legislative Building every night until Sunday, Nov. 13. 

On Friday, Nov. 11, Remembrance Day events will be held all over the province, including a service at the RBC Convention Centre beginning at 10:15 a.m.
