University of Manitoba hours from faculty strike
Agreement must be reached by midnight to avert strike of 1,200 faculty members
University of Manitoba students are anxiously waiting to hear if 1,200 faculty members will strike on Tuesday.
The University of Manitoba Faculty Association has set a strike deadline of 12 a.m. tonight. If the association and the university’s administration can’t come to an agreement within hours, the faculty association will strike.
Conciliation reached an impasse over the weekend, and now both sides are in talks with a provincially-appointed mediator. Both sides have been asked not to comment publicly while the mediation process, which is scheduled to continue today.
The university has not yet released details on exactly what the possible strike will mean for the university’s 29,000 students spread across two campuses but it has set up a website with some answers.
The university’s Strike Information website said the university will remain open if there is a strike and some classes will continue.
It also says class cancellations will be taken on a “case-by-case” basis.
