University football player injured, in coma

A football player from Winnipeg is in a coma in a Quebec hospital after suffering a brain hemorrhage during a game in Sherbrooke on Saturday.

Kevin Kwasny, 21, is in his third season with the Bishop's University Gaiters in Lennoxville, Quebec.

The defensive lineman began complaining of nausea and dizziness midway through a game on Saturday against Montreal's Concordia University Stingers.

Kwasny, who played high school football for St. Paul's Crusaders in Winnipeg, was taken off the field and began vomiting and lost consciousness.

He was rushed to hospital and underwent surgery to relieve pressure from bleeding on his brain.

His parents flew out from Winnipeg to see him Sunday.

He remains in critical condition, in a medically-induced coma.

It's unclear what caused the hemorrhaging. Gaiters coach Tony Addona said Kwasny does not have a history of head injuries, and he did not know if Kwasny took a blow to the head during the game or not.
