U of M architecture students battle it out in gingerbread design competition
Football fields, rollercoasters and even Kanye West were created at 2nd annual gingerbread design competition
A bag of candy, a tube of icing, two sheets of ginger bread and an hour and a half — that's all the students of the faculty of architecture got to create a gingerbread masterpiece.
About 80 students in 20 teams put their design and building training to work to create the ultimate gingerbread masterpiece.
This is the second year the University of Manitoba Association of Architecture Students (UMAAS) organized the event to give students a chance to take a break from cramming for exams to relax and work with their fellow students in a different way.
For fourth year architecture student George Vincent it's a nice change of pace. "We put in a lot of hours here. This is kind of our home and we need to decompress with these sort of events," said Vincent.
From a roller coaster, to the house from the animated movie Up, and even an etched picture of Kanye West, the gingerbread designs were really pushing the limits.
Fourth year landscape and urbanism student Naomi Ratte's group designed the ginger-ride 'Santa's Workshop Roller Coaster'.
"It's important just to breathe and to realize that we are learning so much, but just having fun with it and not taking everything so seriously all the time and just letting loose and having fun with our creative abilities," said Ratte.
All of the designs will be on display at the Gosa Gallery in the University Centre next week and will be auctioned off with the proceeds going towards Winnipeg Harvest.
