Winnipeg police are looking for two men they believe were involved in a pair of attempted carjackings in the St. James area early Wednesday morning, one of which involved a victim who was stabbed.

Police were initially called to the parking lot of a business in the area of St. James Street and Wellington Avenue at about 4 a.m., according to a Wednesday news release.

An employee who worked in the area told police he saw two men on bikes trying to get into parked cars. He honked his car horn to scare them away, but they aggressively approached his car and tried to get in.

The employee managed to lock his doors and drove away without injury, police said.

Another employee in a truck nearby also tried to scare off the suspects by honking his vehicle's horn. One of the men approached that driver and lifted up his shirt, showing what looked like the handle of a gun tucked into his pants. The two men then rode away on their bikes.

As police were looking for the two further north of the initial scene, closer to Saskatchewan Avenue, they were flagged down by a third man.

He told police that two men on bikes tried to steal his car, and stabbed him in his upper leg in the process.

The two took his keys and phone, but weren't able to steal his car because neither of them could drive a standard transmission.

The man was taken to hospital in stable condition.

One of the suspects is described as being in his mid-20s, and was wearing a black baseball cap, a black half mask and a black jacket. The other is described only as a young adult male.

Police believe the incidents are related and the major crimes unit is investigating.

Anyone with information related to these attempted carjackings is asked to call investigators at (204) 986-6219 or Crime Stoppers at (204) 786-TIPS (8477).

Police are also reminding people to be extra careful while there are fewer people around.
