The intersection of Kenaston Boulevard and McGillivray Boulevard has been named Winnipeg's worst, in terms of collisions, by Manitoba Public Insurance.

The intersection of Kenaston Boulevard and McGillivray Boulevard has been named Winnipeg's worst, in terms of collisions, by Manitoba Public Insurance.

A total of 1,052 collisions have been reported at the busy intersection in south Winnipeg from 2005 to 2009.

Not far behind, is Leila Avenue and McPhillips Street with just over a thousand collisions in that same time.

The province's public auto insurer said it decided to release the Top 10 collision intersections with the goal to raise awareness about intersection safety.

Claims data from the Top 10 intersections also reported:

  • A total of three fatalities and 1,500 injuries occurred at these intersections.
  • Friday was the worst day for intersection collisions: 1,233 in total.
  • The span from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. was the worst time period for intersection collisions: 2,020

"Many of these collisions were rear-end collisions," said Ted Hlynsky with MPI. "The message to motorists is to anticipate when the light will change and leave enough space in front of you if you are required to stop suddenly.

"Also, if turning, motorists should ensure they leave enough distance between cars travelling through the intersection to allow for a safe turn. During the winter months traction is not as good as it is with better road conditions. Stopping quickly can be difficult."
