Top 5 things to do in Winnipeg this weekend (Feb. 13-16)
Talented women play the Pambian Tent for Festival and Cootie Club takes over the Purple Room
It’s that weekend of forced romance and misery, but I promise you there are enough fun things happening that you’ll barely even notice.
You can go see all the bands play Festival or check out an art show in China Town or do a little dancing in West Broadway – whatever your heart desires.
There’s also a Cootie Club showcase at The Purple Room Friday night and ATLAAS is totally playing.
Oh, and if you have little humans, there’s a Spanish movie just for them at Cinematheque Sunday afternoon.
WHAT: COLD STUFF – Festival du Voyageur
When: Friday, Saturday and Sunday
Where: Voyageur Park at 866 St. Joseph St.
Cost: $17 for a day pass or $30 for a 10-day pass
That festival where you dress VERY warm and stuff yourself full of poutine and dance on wood chips in heated tents is back again.
Festival du Voyageur starts Friday night, and while lots of the craziness doesn’t start till next weekend (Hello beard-growing competition!), there is still food and music this weekend. Oh, and snow sculptures!
Friday night, your best bet is the Tente Riviere-Rouge MTS around 9:30 p.m. The Noble Thiefs start then followed by Moses Mayes at 11 p.m.
Saturday night check out Slow Spirit at 8 p.m. at the Rendez-Vous on Ice, BB Gun and FINN at 8:45 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. in La Prairie Tent Universite de Saint-Boniface, and try to squeeze in DJ Co-Op’s set at 10 p.m. at Fort Gibraltar.
Sunday night it’s all about the Pambian Tent with Jess Reimer, SC Mira, Mise en Scene and The Revival from 7 p.m. till about midnight.
Dress warm. Be chill about lineups. Bring someone non-complainy.
WHAT: MUSIC – ATLAAS at The Purple Room
When: Friday, Feb. 13 at 8 p.m.
Where: The Purple Room at 318 Ross Ave.
Cost: $5
If you don’t know what Cootie Club is, it’s basically a bi-monthly showcase for women (and non-binary!) that is super affordable and well done.
This weekend they’ve got some jazz and blues and poetry and then The Psychics play and then, at 10:30 p.m., the amazing ATLAAS.
There will also be a DJ in between sets and totally food.
This is a great thing because there are not enough women booking shows and festivals and involved behind-the-scenes our music scene. Go support this. Dance to ATLAAS. It’ll be fun.
(PS: Men are totally welcome. Don’t be ‘fraid, guys.)
WHAT: FUN – Living Hour at Handsome Daughter
When: Saturday, Feb. 14 at 10 p.m.
Where: The Handsome Daughter at 61 Sherbrook St.
Cost: $8
Go see Living Hour (formerly The Hours) play at Handsome Daughter this weekend.
They’re good, tickets are only $8 and some of the money goes to support one of my favourite places – Art City!
There will be music and a DJ and the Art City photo booth, so go bring someone who likes West Broadway as much as you do and spend your Valentine’s Day at a good event for good people.
WHAT: ART – Five Hundred and One Paintings + Buildings at Actual
When: Saturday, Feb. 14 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Where: Actual gallery at 300 Ross Ave.
Cost: FREE
Buildings hasn't been shown in public before outside of this exhibit so that's a big deal.
It’s been up for a bit and will be up for a bit longer (until March 21!), but the special party thing is Saturday night, and it will be a lovely night.
There will be snacks and music too, so just go, OK? Watch a short video description of the exhibit page-left or click here.
WHAT: KIDS – Cabin Fever at Cinematheque
When: Sunday, Feb. 15 at 2 p.m.
Where: Cinematheque at 100 Arthur St.
Cost: FREE
If you find yourself saddled with some little people this weekend and they’re getting super restless because it’s so miserably cold outside and the couch gets boring after about five minutes, you should bring them for some high-brow cartoon watching at Cinematheque on Sunday.
They’re doing their Cabin Fever thing again where they let your offspring come and watch a kids movie for FREE and also make some art.
This weekend it’s Nocturna, a Spanish movie about an orphan who freaks out because a shadow creature is eating stars out of the sky. It sounds pretty crazy and the animation is beautiful, so I think it will be fun.
