'They just go so well together': Beer and pizza delivery now on the menu
Hops Pizza says it’s the first company of its kind in Canada
Right now there's only one city in Canada where hungry, thirsty people can order a hot pizza and cold beer online — and that's in Winnipeg.
Hops Pizza launched in the Manitoba capital last week.
Co-owner Angelo Paletta said it's mission is to take pizza to the "next level" by delivering freshly made pies and cold beer straight to the homes of Winnipeggers.
"Sure we can always order pizza but sometimes getting cold beer was a real hassle," he said.
"And they just go so well together."
Along with lager and 'za, Hops also has potato chips on the menu. Paletta said his brother introduced him to the concept of eating Old Dutch chips with pizza and he hasn't looked back since.
"You eat them together and it's fantastic," Paletta said.
The entrepreneur worked for about eight months with Manitoba Liquor and Gaming Authority to come up with a business model that didn't break the law, he said.
Manitoba Liquor Marts provides home delivery of beer, wine and spirits in Winnipeg and Brandon, but for a small fee.
Drivers with Hops Pizza are all trained by the commission to serve alcohol and will ask for identification to confirm the age of customers, said Paletta.
He said the response on social media to the business has been very positive so far.
"It's a typical Winnipeg scenario where we love to boost each other up," Paletta said.
"People have been just so encouraging about it."
The company plans to expand to rural Manitoba and then to other Canadian cities in the future.
